  • AtlantaFX, Cashmere Agency - Originated social media and television entertainment’s first public AI stunt in 2022, staging the “hostile takeover” of @AtlantaFX Twitter handle by an actual AI for the final season. Worked with developers to train the model that took over tweets for a full day.

  • Apple Music, Amazon Music - Assisted in training music discovery (hip-hop) algorithm for both streaming services.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

My main thing is to bring AI to the people.

For me, AI’s biggest dangers stem from who makes decisions about how it should be developed and deployed, and what is informing those decisions. It’s usually a few folks very disconnected from the people deciding what is the “best way forward” for the people. My philosophy on the issue is rooted in decolonizing AI. I’m particularly interested being of service in conversations around AI ethics. Especially conversations that affect the arts, under-served communities, and arts movements. My positions on AI are nuanced… I don’t entirely agree with widespread distrust in arts communities about this tech. I also don’t think AI is ready to be deployed into classrooms and integrated into higher education.

For me, the scary part is not “AI taking jobs”. The scary part is that we have created a paradigm where a person’s survival, well-being and sense of value can be threatened by the arrival of a machine. Why are people doing jobs that can be automated, and not being prepared for the possibility they may be replaced? That’s a cultural issue. It’s a toxic capitalism issue. Not a technology issue. The structures are the problem, not the machines.

On one hand, I think large generative models are ok - - - outside of the clear ethical challenges of using widespread human creativity to train these models without human consent. And the huge carbon footprint they might come with. And the human sweat labor that was used to build the models. Ok, maybe they are highly problematic….But the tools themselves democratize artistry in the same way sampling and digital music tools gave poor kids across the world a chance to become musicians. I come from hip-hop culture, and may not exist as an artist without the appearance of certain tech that traditional musicians hated upon arrival. On the other hand, I think facial recognition tech (FRT) can perpetuate extremely harmful biases and for now needs to be taken out of any type of law enforcement.

So basically, I don’t see things as black and white across the board (pardon the FRT pun). Drawing on two decades of creative leadership in music, marketing, education and tech, I offer a point of view you won’t really find anywhere else. I use that POV to guide conversations and collaborations responsibly. I try to make sure whatever I’m working on resonates culturally and puts humanity first. Before the 2022 AI hype cycle began, I was training music discovery algorithms (2016-2021) and tinkering with machine learning on the AtlantaFX Twitter account (2021). In those spaces, I got intimate with some of the fundamentals, and was lucky enough to see this work live out in the world. My work with grassroots organizations pushing back against AI in data driven policing keeps me rooted in a solemn understanding of the problems. I’m always ready to tell reckless technologists to f*ck off. I keep a healthy dose of circumspect about AI and the hype around it. Add it all up and I make a great person to talk to about how we can help humanity with this tech, and imagine new solutions. I’m more interested in facing our collective challenges than I am in helping the rich get richer.
